About me

I was fortunate enough to grow up in a musical family with a dad who played piano by ear and a grandma who was a classical pianist. Having driven my family and neighbours mad by incessantly improvising on recorder and then my mum’s violin for weeks at a time, I began cello aged 10 and as soon as I could pluck a few strings, my dad got me improvising. Home was playing by ear, school was classical training.

The creativity of a BA in Music and Related Arts was a natural choice for me. It immersed me in, and deepened my love of, composition, improvisation and multidisciplinary performance.

It also set me up for my life-long career working as a musician in theatre, dance, storytelling and film and gave me a broad range of tools with which to share my love of music with others.

Musical influences

I love live instruments and music from across the globe. English and Celtic folk music, Western classical and jazz have been constants but I’ve also spent time with Indian classical and folk music – Scandinavian, Eastern European, klezmer, Middle Eastern and East African – collecting numerous instruments along the way.

Professional development

After years of creating and delivering work, I was fortunate enough to receive artist development funding from the Arts Council England to refine my musicianship. I am delighted to be reimagining my cello playing, developing my voice and composition techniques. Through the Alexander Technique, a more natural playing style is emerging through the release of habit patterns.
